    Terms of Service

    Last updated 30 September 2026

    These terms explain the rules for using HistoryTrack, what you can expect from us, and what we expect from you. They are written in plain English.

    1. Agreeing to these terms

    These terms are an agreement between you and HistoryTrack LLC, a Georgia limited liability company (“HistoryTrack”, “we”, “us”), about your use of historytrack.io, the HistoryTrack newsletter and our related services (together, “HistoryTrack”). By creating an account, subscribing or otherwise using HistoryTrack, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use HistoryTrack.

    If you use HistoryTrack for an organisation, you confirm that you may accept these terms for it.

    2. An invite-only preview

    HistoryTrack is in an early, invite-only preview. Features, data and limits (such as the number of Ask questions per day) change often, and parts of the service may be unavailable, slow or incomplete. We may add, change or remove features at any time.

    HistoryTrack is free to use today. If we introduce paid plans, we will set out their price and terms before you are asked to pay, and nothing is charged without your agreement.

    3. Your account

    • You must be at least 16 years old to create an account.
    • Invitations are personal. Please do not share your invitation link or your account.
    • Keep your password safe and tell us at [email protected] if you think someone else has used your account. You are responsible for activity on your account.
    • Give us an email address you control, so we can reach you about your account.

    4. Using HistoryTrack responsibly

    Please do not:

    • break the law, or use HistoryTrack to harass, threaten, defame or harm anyone;
    • post content that is unlawful, hateful, sexually explicit, or that infringes someone else’s rights;
    • submit false citations, fabricated sources or content you know to be misleading;
    • use locations, finds or research in HistoryTrack to dig, detect or remove objects without the permissions the law requires, or to trade in looted or illegally exported cultural property;
    • enter protected sites, private land or closed areas without permission;
    • scrape, bulk-download or copy the service by automated means beyond what the data licences allow, or overload, probe or attack our systems;
    • get around invitation, access or usage limits, or access other members’ private data;
    • use Ask HistoryTrack or other features to build a competing dataset or model, or resell access to the service.

    We may remove content that breaks these rules.

    5. Your content

    Private content stays yours

    Your saved items, trips, notes, dig workspace projects, finds and photos belong to you. You give us permission to store, copy, process and display them only as needed to provide HistoryTrack to you (for example, showing your trip on the map or sending a photo for identification when you ask).

    Contributions

    When you submit a contribution through Contribute, you agree that, once it is reviewed and published, it is made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). We credit you by name if you choose that, otherwise the contribution is credited without your name. We may edit a contribution for accuracy, format or length, combine it with other sources, or decline to publish it. You confirm that you have the right to submit what you send, including any files, and that your citations are accurate to the best of your knowledge.

    Ideas, comments and feedback

    Ideas and comments you post publicly are shown with your display name. You give us a worldwide, royalty-free licence to display them on HistoryTrack. If you send us suggestions or feedback, we may use them to improve HistoryTrack without owing you anything.

    6. Atlas data and our content

    HistoryTrack compiles open datasets and reference works from many sources. Each source stays under its own licence (for example CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA), and each record shows where its text comes from and under what licence. The main sources are listed in the Sources and licences section of our home page and in the Sources and methods panel in the atlas. When you reuse that material, follow the source’s licence.

    The HistoryTrack name, logo, software, design, and text and images we create ourselves belong to HistoryTrack unless a record says otherwise. You may quote short passages with a link back to the record. Map display is provided by Mapbox under its own terms.

    7. AI answers

    Ask HistoryTrack and find identification use AI to produce answers and suggestions. They draw on atlas records, but AI can misread, combine or state things wrongly. Treat answers as a starting point, check the linked records and original sources before relying on them, and do not use AI suggestions as the basis for decisions about excavation, handling or selling objects.

    8. Historical information is not professional advice

    Historical knowledge is uncertain and often disputed. Dates, borders, locations and attributions in HistoryTrack may be approximate, contested or wrong, and confidence and quality scores are guides, not guarantees. HistoryTrack is for learning and research. It is not legal, heritage, safety, academic or other professional advice. If you spot an error, please report it from the record.

    9. Trips and travel

    Trips, itineraries, opening hours, prices, access notes and directions are provided for planning only. They can change without notice and may be out of date. Check with the site or an official source before you travel, and follow local rules, signs and staff instructions at every site.

    During a live tour, watch where you are going and stay aware of traffic and your surroundings. Your safety is your responsibility, and HistoryTrack does not arrange or supervise travel.

    10. Links and news from other sites

    HistoryTrack links to other websites and shows headlines, short summaries and links from news sources, journals and other publishers in its feed and newsletter. Those sites are run by others, and their content, terms and privacy practices are their own. A link does not mean we endorse the site.

    11. The newsletter and notifications

    The newsletter is sent only after you confirm your address. Every issue has a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can also unsubscribe by writing to [email protected].

    When you follow a record, updates about it appear in the app and, as you choose at Email preferences, by email. Every notification email has a one-click unsubscribe link. Notifications are a convenience: we do not promise to notify you of every change.

    12. Suspending or closing accounts

    You can stop using HistoryTrack at any time and delete your account from Your data in the account menu, or ask us to delete it at [email protected].

    We may suspend or close an account, or remove content, if you break these terms, if we need to protect HistoryTrack, its members or others, or if we are required to by law. Where reasonable, we will tell you why. We may also end the preview or stop offering HistoryTrack; if we do, we will give reasonable notice and a way to request a copy of your data.

    Sections about your content, our content, disclaimers, liability and governing law continue to apply after your account ends. Published contributions remain available under CC BY 4.0.

    13. Disclaimers

    HistoryTrack is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement or uninterrupted service. Some jurisdictions do not allow these exclusions, so some of them may not apply to you.

    14. Limitation of liability

    To the fullest extent the law allows, HistoryTrack will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, travel costs or opportunities, arising from your use of HistoryTrack. Our total liability for any claim relating to HistoryTrack is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or 100 US dollars.

    Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence. If you are a consumer in the EEA or the UK, you keep all the rights your local law gives you.

    15. Governing law

    These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Georgia, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be heard in the state or federal courts located in Fulton County, Georgia, and you and we agree to their jurisdiction. If you are a consumer living in the EEA or the UK, you may also bring proceedings in the courts where you live, and the mandatory consumer protections of your country still apply.

    16. Changes to these terms

    We may update these terms as HistoryTrack develops. We will post the new version here with a new date and, for significant changes, tell you by email or in the app before they take effect. If you keep using HistoryTrack after that, the new terms apply. If you do not agree, you can close your account.

    17. General

    If any part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later. You may not transfer your rights under these terms without our consent; we may transfer ours as part of a reorganisation, merger or sale. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between us about HistoryTrack.
